Why does my WiFi keep disconnecting?

Asked by Avtoservis_inei — Feb 9, 2025 — Computers & Internet Resolved

I got a Linksys wireless router and it keeps dropping my connection every 20-30 minutes. I have to disable and re-enable my wireless adapter to reconnect. My laptop works fine on ethernet. Is it the router, my wireless card, or interference from something? My neighbor has a cordless phone — could that cause it?

This is a case where spending a little more upfront saves you money in the long run. Cheap hardware fails faster and costs more to replace. Buy quality components from reputable brands and they'll last years longer.

I'd post this on the Tom's Hardware or AnandTech forums with your full system specs — CPU, RAM, motherboard, the works. People can't really help without knowing what you've got. The more detail you give, the better the answers.

I'd check Device Manager for any yellow exclamation marks. That's Windows telling you a driver is missing or broken. Right-click My Computer, Properties, Hardware tab, Device Manager. Fix anything with a yellow mark and a lot of weird problems clear up.

The best resource for this kind of thing is Tom's Hardware forums. Someone has almost certainly had your exact problem and posted a solution. The community there is really knowledgeable and helpful.
