What's the best way to back up my files?

Asked by Avtoservis_gmei — Jan 16, 2025 — Computers & Internet Resolved

I have photos, documents, and music I can't afford to lose. My hard drive is making clicking sounds which scares me. What's the best way to back everything up? Should I buy an external hard drive, burn DVDs, or use one of those online backup services? How much storage do I need? I probably have about 20GB of important stuff.

I'd recommend trying the free solution first before spending money. Nine times out of ten, the free option works just as well as the paid one. Only upgrade to paid software if the free version doesn't meet your needs.

Honestly at some point a clean reinstall of Windows fixes more than any amount of tinkering. XP gets crufty after a couple years. Back up your files, find your product key, and do a fresh install. It'll feel like a brand new machine.

Definitely back up your important files before trying any fixes. I learned this the hard way when I lost 3 years of photos trying to fix a simple problem. Get an external hard drive or burn DVDs of your important stuff first.

I build computers for a living and can tell you that most of these problems come down to three things: not enough RAM, outdated drivers, or malware. Check those first before spending money on new hardware.

I'd check Device Manager for any yellow exclamation marks. That's Windows telling you a driver is missing or broken. Right-click My Computer, Properties, Hardware tab, Device Manager. Fix anything with a yellow mark and a lot of weird problems clear up.

The best resource for this kind of thing is Tom's Hardware forums. Someone has almost certainly had your exact problem and posted a solution. The community there is really knowledgeable and helpful.
