What's the point of daylight saving time?

Asked by Donna Vasquez — Feb 25, 2025 — Society & Culture Resolved

We just changed the clocks and I'm exhausted. I don't understand why we still do this. Wasn't it originally for farmers? But farmers hate it too. Does it actually save energy like they claim? Some states don't observe it at all. Can we just pick one time and stick with it? Who even makes this decision?

Great question. I've thought about this a lot and honestly I think both sides have valid points. The key is finding a balance that works for your life rather than following what everyone else does.

Talk to people who actually disagree with you instead of just reading things that confirm what you already believe. That's the only way I ever change my mind about anything. It's uncomfortable but worth it.

My grandmother always said the more things change, the more they stay the same. Every generation thinks the one after it is going to ruin everything, and somehow the world keeps turning. I try to keep that perspective.

I think the real issue here is that society is changing faster than most people can keep up with. What was normal 20 years ago might be considered outdated now, and what we think is normal today will probably seem old-fashioned in 20 years.
