Is cursive handwriting still important to teach kids?

Asked by Alice Hartwell — Feb 14, 2025 — Society & Culture Resolved

My kid's school is cutting cursive from the curriculum. My mother is horrified and says kids need to know how to write in cursive. But honestly, when was the last time I wrote anything in cursive other than my signature? Is there any practical reason to still teach it? Or is this just nostalgia?

I think the real issue here is that society is changing faster than most people can keep up with. What was normal 20 years ago might be considered outdated now, and what we think is normal today will probably seem old-fashioned in 20 years.

I think kindness goes a long way here. Whatever the 'right' answer is, you can usually find it by treating people the way you'd want to be treated. That old rule still works better than any complicated theory.

This is one of those topics where there's no single right answer — it depends heavily on your values and circumstances. I'd encourage you to look at it from multiple perspectives before forming a strong opinion.

The media loves to make everything sound like a huge crisis because fear sells papers and gets ratings. Take what you see on the news with a grain of salt. Most people in real life are decent and reasonable.
