Why do people get so emotional about sports teams they have no connection to?

Asked by admin — Sep 11, 2025 — Society & Culture Open

My coworkers will be in genuinely bad moods for days when their team loses a game. They've never played for the team, don't know any players personally. Why do people get so emotionally invested in sports? Is there something I'm missing? I just don't get the appeal of caring this much about strangers playing a game.

The media loves to make everything sound like a huge crisis because fear sells papers and gets ratings. Take what you see on the news with a grain of salt. Most people in real life are decent and reasonable.

I think the real issue here is that society is changing faster than most people can keep up with. What was normal 20 years ago might be considered outdated now, and what we think is normal today will probably seem old-fashioned in 20 years.

I think kindness goes a long way here. Whatever the 'right' answer is, you can usually find it by treating people the way you'd want to be treated. That old rule still works better than any complicated theory.
