How do I keep my kids entertained on a long car trip?
We're driving 12 hours for a family vacation and my kids will be bored out of their minds. 'Are we there yet' will start within the first hour. What are good ways to keep kids entertained on a long car trip? Games, activities, snacks? Should I get a portable DVD player or is that giving up?

Whatever you pick, the most important thing is that you actually enjoy it. There's no point owning the 'best' gear if you never use it. I've seen people get so caught up in specs that they forget to have fun with the hobby.

Don't spend a lot of money right away. The industry changes constantly and what's considered the best today will be outdated in a year or two. Start with a mid-range option and you'll be happy.
My buddy got me into this and the best thing he did was let me try his stuff before I bought anything. See if you have a friend who's already into it, or check if there's a local club. Hands-on beats reading reviews any day.
