Why is my computer's hard drive almost full when I haven't saved much?

Asked by Charlie Reeves — Jan 18, 2026 — Computers & Internet Resolved

My hard drive is reporting nearly full but I've barely saved any files. Where is all the space going? Could it be temporary files, the browser cache, system stuff? How do I find out what's eating my disk space? How do I safely clean it up without deleting something important?

I'd recommend trying the free solution first before spending money. Nine times out of ten, the free option works just as well as the paid one. Only upgrade to paid software if the free version doesn't meet your needs.

Check how much free space is on your hard drive. Windows needs at least 15% free to run well — it uses that space for virtual memory and the swap file. If your drive is 95% full, that alone will make everything crawl.

I build computers for a living and can tell you that most of these problems come down to three things: not enough RAM, outdated drivers, or malware. Check those first before spending money on new hardware.

Make sure you have the latest drivers from the actual manufacturer's website, not whatever Windows Update gives you. Video card drivers especially — nVidia and ATI release new ones every month and they make a real difference.
