Why do I dwell on embarrassing things I did years ago?

Asked by Frank Okonkwo — Feb 9, 2026 — Society & Culture Open

I'll be lying in bed and suddenly cringe at something embarrassing I did five or ten years ago. Things nobody else even remembers. Why does my brain do this? Why do embarrassing memories stick around and torment me? Does everyone experience this? How do I stop dwelling on the past?

The media loves to make everything sound like a huge crisis because fear sells papers and gets ratings. Take what you see on the news with a grain of salt. Most people in real life are decent and reasonable.

Honestly I think people overthink stuff like this. Just do what feels right to you and don't worry so much about what other people think. At the end of the day you have to live your own life, not theirs.

This is one of those topics where there's no single right answer — it depends heavily on your values and circumstances. I'd encourage you to look at it from multiple perspectives before forming a strong opinion.

Talk to people who actually disagree with you instead of just reading things that confirm what you already believe. That's the only way I ever change my mind about anything. It's uncomfortable but worth it.
