How do I get into a hobby without spending a lot of money upfront?

Asked by Avtoservis_inei — Feb 23, 2026 — Entertainment & Music Resolved

I want to try a new hobby but a lot of hobbies seem to require expensive equipment to even get started. How do I explore a new hobby cheaply, in case I don't stick with it? Should I buy used gear, borrow, or rent? How do I avoid sinking money into something I might quit?

Whatever you pick, the most important thing is that you actually enjoy it. There's no point owning the 'best' gear if you never use it. I've seen people get so caught up in specs that they forget to have fun with the hobby.

Personal preference plays a huge role here so take my recommendation with a grain of salt. What I love, you might hate. But based on what you described, I think you'd really enjoy what I'm about to suggest.

My buddy got me into this and the best thing he did was let me try his stuff before I bought anything. See if you have a friend who's already into it, or check if there's a local club. Hands-on beats reading reviews any day.

Mainstream isn't always best. Some of my favorite stuff never got famous. Dig past the top 40 and the big releases — the underground and indie scene has hidden gems that the casual fan never finds. That's half the fun.
