Installing Exchange 2000
This guide covers a clean installation of Exchange 2000 Server on a Windows 2000 member server in an existing Active Directory domain.
Prerequisites
- Windows 2000 Server with SP3 or later
- Active Directory domain functional
- IIS with SMTP and NNTP services installed
- Schema Admin and Enterprise Admin group membership
- Exchange 2000 SP3 CD or downloaded installation files
Step 1: Prepare Active Directory
Exchange 2000 extends the AD schema with over 1,000 new attributes. Run ForestPrep first:
REM Run from the Exchange CD D:\setup\i386\setup.exe /ForestPrep REM Then prepare the domain D:\setup\i386\setup.exe /DomainPrep
ForestPrep must be run by a Schema Admin. It modifies the schema and creates the Exchange organization object. DomainPrep creates security groups and permissions in each domain that will host Exchange servers.
Step 2: Run Setup
- Log in as a user with local Administrator rights and Exchange Full Administrator permissions.
- Run
setup.exefrom the Exchange CD. - Select Exchange Server and choose the components to install (Messaging and Collaboration, Exchange System Management Tools).
- Select or create an Administrative Group and Routing Group.
- Setup installs Exchange services, configures IIS virtual directories, and creates the first mailbox store.
- Restart the server after setup completes.
Step 3: Post-Installation
- Install Exchange 2000 SP3 immediately
- Configure Recipient Update Service (RUS) to stamp email addresses on AD accounts
