What's New in Windows XP

Windows XP, released October 25, 2001, unifies the consumer (9x/Me) and business (NT/2000) Windows lines into a single operating system built on the NT kernel.

Major New Features

  • Luna Visual Style: A completely redesigned UI with rounded buttons, colorful title bars, and a task-oriented Start menu. The default "Blue" theme can be changed to "Olive Green" or "Silver".
  • Fast User Switching: Multiple users can be logged in simultaneously. Switch between accounts without closing applications.
  • Remote Desktop: Built-in RDP client and server. Connect to your XP workstation from anywhere (Professional edition only).
  • System Restore: Automatically creates restore points before major changes. Roll back to a previous state if something goes wrong.
  • Windows Firewall: A built-in packet-filtering firewall (ICF — Internet Connection Firewall). Enabled by default starting with SP2.
  • ClearType: Sub-pixel font rendering for LCD screens. Text appears much sharper on flat-panel displays.
  • Device Driver Rollback: If a new driver causes problems, roll back to the previous version from Device Manager.
  • Stability: Built on the NT kernel — much more stable than Windows Me. True protected memory and preemptive multitasking.
