Fox is promoting this new show American Idol where viewers vote for the best singer. After Survivor and Big Brother, reality TV is clearly here to stay. But a singing competition? Seems like it could either be huge or totally bomb.

Thoughts? Is reality TV a fad or the future of television?

Survivor proved people love watching regular people compete. A singing version could work. The phone-in voting is clever — makes viewers feel involved.

Reality TV is a fad. Give it 2-3 more years and people will move on to the next thing. Scripted TV will always be superior.

My prediction: it'll be moderately popular for a season or two then fade away. There's only so much singing you can watch.
