Does anyone else feel like the internet is getting too corporate?

Remember when the internet was mostly personal websites, hobby forums, and GeoCities pages? Now it feels like every site is run by a corporation trying to sell you something or harvest your data. The indie web isn't dead but it feels like it's shrinking. Are we losing something special? |

The indie web is absolutely still alive, you just have to look harder. Webrings, personal sites, small forums like this one — they're out there. Don't let the corporations win. |

AOL, Yahoo, and Microsoft want to turn the internet into cable TV with channels they control. That's always been the corporate vision. We have to actively resist it. |

The solution is to make your own website. Seriously. Every person who builds a personal site is a vote against corporate homogenization. |
