Help: Windows XP won't recognize my USB devices

Just installed Windows XP and half my USB devices don't work. My printer, scanner, and webcam all worked fine in Windows 98. XP either doesn't recognize them or installs generic drivers that don't work properly.

Is there a trick to getting older USB devices working in XP? The manufacturer websites don't have XP drivers yet.

Welcome to the XP driver situation. Check Windows Update — Microsoft has been adding drivers there. Also try the Windows 2000 drivers for your devices, they often work in XP.

Some older USB devices genuinely won't work in XP because the drivers used Win9x-specific APIs. You might need to keep a Win98 partition for those devices unfortunately.

Give it a few months. Most manufacturers will release XP drivers eventually. The transition period always sucks but it gets better.
