Want to do some winter day hikes this year but I've only hiked in summer. What gear do I need to not freeze to death? Temperatures will be around 20-30F. I have decent boots but no real cold-weather hiking clothes. Budget is around $200 for everything. |

Layers are everything. Base layer (synthetic or merino wool), mid layer (fleece), outer layer (wind/waterproof shell). Cotton kills in winter — avoid it completely. |

Good wool socks matter more than expensive boots. Darn Tough or SmartWool. Your feet being warm and dry is the difference between fun and misery. |

Don't forget hand protection. Bring liner gloves AND shell mittens. And a warm hat — you lose a lot of heat through your head. |
