Want to do some winter day hikes this year but I've only hiked in summer. What gear do I need to not freeze to death? Temperatures will be around 20-30F.

I have decent boots but no real cold-weather hiking clothes. Budget is around $200 for everything.

Layers are everything. Base layer (synthetic or merino wool), mid layer (fleece), outer layer (wind/waterproof shell). Cotton kills in winter — avoid it completely.

Good wool socks matter more than expensive boots. Darn Tough or SmartWool. Your feet being warm and dry is the difference between fun and misery.

Don't forget hand protection. Bring liner gloves AND shell mittens. And a warm hat — you lose a lot of heat through your head.
