Butt joints are weak but easy. Dovetails are strong and beautiful. Mortise and tenon is the workhorse. What is your go-to joint?

You need: a good hand saw ($25), a chisel set ($30), a drill ($50), sandpaper, and clamps. Start small, add tools as needed.

Hand tools are quieter, cheaper, and connect you to the wood. Power tools are faster. Most of us use both.

A simple shelf, a cutting board, or a small box. Start with projects that teach basic skills and are actually useful.

Danish oil for a natural look, polyurethane for durability, shellac for a warm glow. Finishing can make or break a project.
