Wave height, period, and wind direction. A longer period means more powerful, organized waves. Offshore wind cleans them up.

Practice the pop-up on land a hundred times. One smooth motion, not a slow crawl. Muscle memory makes it automatic.

3/2mm for moderate water, 4/3mm for cold. A good wetsuit extends your season by months. Get one that fits snug.
