Web Design Tips for 2001
Because your GeoCities page deserves to look GOOD
The Rules:
1. Keep it simple.
Just because you CAN use 15 animated GIFs doesn't mean you SHOULD.
2. Don't use Comic Sans for everything.
(I know, I know. It's hard. But try Arial or Verdana for body text.)
3. Limit your color palette.
Pick 3-4 colors max. Use the web-safe color chart (216 colors).
4. Make text READABLE.
Red text on blue background = BAD
Dark text on light background = GOOD
5. Optimize your images.
Not everyone has cable! Keep total page size under 50KB for 56K users.
GIF for logos/animations, JPEG for photos.
6. Test in both browsers.
Internet Explorer AND Netscape Navigator. Yes, they render differently.
Yes, it's annoying.
7. Add ALT text to images.
Some people browse with images off to save bandwidth.
Recommended Tools:
- Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 (the BEST web editor)
- Adobe Photoshop 6.0 (for graphics)
- Notepad (for the purists)
