What happened to Geocities? Are they deleting pages?

Asked by admin — Jan 16, 2025 — Technology & Internet Open

I have a Geocities page I built in 1998 with all my Dragonball Z fan art and I heard Yahoo might be shutting down Geocities. Is this true? How do I save my page? I don't know HTML well enough to move it somewhere else. Where should I host my page if Geocities goes away?

Yahoo hasn't officially announced shutting down Geocities but they're clearly neglecting it. For now your page is safe but you should definitely save a copy. Open your page in a browser, then go to File > Save As > Web Page Complete. This saves the HTML and all your images. Then look into Tripod or Angelfire for free hosting, or spend $5/month on real hosting.

Use HTTrack Website Copier to download your entire Geocities site, including all linked pages and images. It's free software that mirrors websites to your hard drive. Then you can upload the whole thing to another host. Geocities URLs are iconic though — I'd be sad to see them go. Does anyone remember the neighborhood system?

Even if Geocities doesn't shut down, you should move to better hosting. Geocities adds pop-up ads, has limited bandwidth, and looks unprofessional. You can get shared hosting for $3-5/month at Dreamhost or BlueHost. They give you way more space and your own domain name. Transferring is just copying your HTML files to the new server via FTP.
