What is HDTV and do I need to buy a new TV for it?
I keep seeing HDTV mentioned but I'm confused. Is HDTV a channel? A type of TV? A signal? My regular TV works fine — why would I spend $1000+ on a new one? When is everything switching to HDTV? Will my old TV stop working? I heard there's going to be a digital TV transition. What does that mean for me?

Personal preference plays a huge role here so take my recommendation with a grain of salt. What I love, you might hate. But based on what you described, I think you'd really enjoy what I'm about to suggest.
Whatever you pick, the most important thing is that you actually enjoy it. There's no point owning the 'best' gear if you never use it. I've seen people get so caught up in specs that they forget to have fun with the hobby.
