What's the best cell phone plan for a teenager?
My 16-year-old needs a cell phone (mostly for safety/emergencies). But she also wants to text her friends constantly. Texting plans are expensive — $5 for 250 texts?! What's the cheapest way to get her a phone without running up a huge bill? Are prepaid phones better than a family plan? What about those new unlimited texting plans?

I learned the hard way to always back up before messing with this kind of thing. Burn a CD-R of anything important first. It takes 10 minutes and could save you from losing everything if something goes sideways.
My advice: don't overthink it. Pick the option that works best for your situation right now. Technology changes every 2-3 years anyway so nothing you choose today is permanent. The best technology is the one you actually use.
Honestly the manual that came with it explains this pretty well if you actually read it. I know nobody reads manuals but for once it's worth flipping through. The troubleshooting section in the back covers the most common problems.
I've been using computers since the early 90s and the answer to this has changed dramatically over the years. Right now, the best approach is to use open source alternatives when possible — they're usually free and often better than commercial products.
