How do I get rid of the MSN Messenger ads?

Asked by Dave Modem — Jun 13, 2025 — Technology & Internet Resolved

Every time I open MSN Messenger there's a giant ad banner at the bottom of the window and another one in the contact list. They blink and some of them have sound. It's driving me insane. Is there a way to turn these off? My friend said something about editing a file or using a program called Messenger Plus. Is that safe?

Have you tried checking the manufacturer's website for updates? A lot of these issues get fixed in patches that most people don't know about. Also check your firewall settings — sometimes they block things they shouldn't.

I work in IT and see this question a lot. The short answer is yes, it's worth doing. The long answer depends on your specific setup. What operating system are you running? That makes a big difference in the approach.

This is actually a really common misconception. The technology works differently than most people think. I'd recommend reading HowStuffWorks.com for a good beginner explanation before diving into the technical details.

Honestly the manual that came with it explains this pretty well if you actually read it. I know nobody reads manuals but for once it's worth flipping through. The troubleshooting section in the back covers the most common problems.
