How do I stop telemarketers and is the Do Not Call list real?

Asked by admin — Jun 26, 2025 — Technology & Internet Resolved

I get 4-5 telemarketing calls every single evening, always during dinner. Someone told me there's a national Do Not Call registry I can sign up for. Is this a real government thing or another scam? Does it actually work? How long does it take to kick in? What about the calls that say it's a 'survey' so they get around the rules?

Whatever you do, don't pay some 'computer guy' $80/hour to do this. It's a 20-minute job you can handle yourself. There are step-by-step guides all over the web with screenshots. Save your money for a faster modem or more RAM.

First thing I'd do is reboot and try again. Sounds dumb but you'd be amazed how many 'tech problems' fix themselves with a restart. If that doesn't work, write down the EXACT error message and search for it — somebody on Experts-Exchange or a Geocities help page has hit the same thing.

Honestly the manual that came with it explains this pretty well if you actually read it. I know nobody reads manuals but for once it's worth flipping through. The troubleshooting section in the back covers the most common problems.

I work in IT and see this question a lot. The short answer is yes, it's worth doing. The long answer depends on your specific setup. What operating system are you running? That makes a big difference in the approach.
