What's the best way to discover new music I'll like?

Asked by admin — Oct 24, 2025 — Entertainment & Music Open

I listen to the same albums over and over because I don't know how to find new music. The radio plays the same 20 songs. How do people discover new bands and artists? Are there websites that recommend music based on what you already like? I want to expand my taste beyond the mainstream.

Honestly just dive in. You learn this stuff by doing it, not by researching it forever. I spent months reading about getting started instead of actually starting. Looking back I wasted a lot of time being scared to begin.

Mainstream isn't always best. Some of my favorite stuff never got famous. Dig past the top 40 and the big releases — the underground and indie scene has hidden gems that the casual fan never finds. That's half the fun.

I've been into this hobby for over 10 years and the best advice I can give a beginner is: don't overthink it. Start with something affordable, learn the basics, and then upgrade once you know what you actually want and need.

Check out dedicated forums and message boards for this topic. The communities are usually very welcoming to newcomers and can give much more detailed advice than a general Q&A site. Plus they have buyer's guides and FAQ sections.
