Overclocking my Athlon — how far can I push it?

Running an Athlon XP 1600+ and I want to see how much free performance I can squeeze out. I've got a decent cooler (Thermaltake Volcano 7) and good case airflow.

Anyone have experience overclocking Palomino core Athlons? What's a safe voltage bump? I don't want to fry it but I'd like to push 1.5-1.6GHz if possible.

Those Palomino cores OC pretty well. I got my 1600+ to 1.53GHz stable by bumping FSB to 145MHz. Voltage at 1.80V, temps stayed under 55C with a good cooler.

Make sure your RAM can handle the increased FSB. That's usually what limits you, not the CPU itself. Get some quality PC2700 DDR if you're serious about overclocking.

Use Prime95 to stress test for at least 24 hours before you call it stable. Anything less and you'll get random crashes under load.
