Thinking about getting a laptop — worth it in 2001?

My job requires some travel and I'm tired of being disconnected. Laptops are still really expensive though — $1500+ for anything decent. Are they worth it yet or is the performance gap with desktops still too big? Mainly need it for email, web, Word/Excel, and maybe some light photo editing. |

For what you described, a laptop is totally fine. You don't need gaming performance. Dell Inspiron 4100 or IBM ThinkPad T23 are both solid for $1200-1500. |

ThinkPad keyboards are the best in the business. If you're going to type a lot, go IBM. The build quality is in another league. |

Don't forget about battery life. Most laptops get maybe 2-3 hours tops with real use. Get an extended battery if travel is the main reason. |
