Talk to your local police about setting up a program. Regular meetings, a phone tree, and watchful neighbors deter crime.

Collect a neighbors mail when they travel, report anything that looks off, and just know each others names. Community is security.

Good exterior lighting, trimmed shrubs near windows, solid locks, and a barking dog. Most break-ins are crimes of opportunity.
