Observing and recording the natural world. Nature journals, sketching wildlife, phenology, and seasonal change. Slow down and really see.

When does the first robin appear? When do the maples turn? Tracking these dates year after year reveals patterns.

Can we pin this thread? This is essential information for all members.

Honestly this should be in the FAQ. Beginners ask this every single week.

My setup is slightly different but I adapted this advice and it worked great.

Date, location, weather, and what you observe. Words and sketches together. The act of recording makes you see more deeply.

This is exactly the kind of straight talk I come here for. No fluff, just help.

My results were slightly different but in the same ballpark. Good advice overall.
Avtoservis_inei   Sit spots and quiet observation Sep 24, 2026 3:19 pm
Sit still in one place for twenty minutes. The wildlife forgets you are there and the real show begins. Patience reveals everything.

Update from my earlier post: tried it and it works like a charm. Thank you!!!

Adding one tip: make sure you double-check everything before you start. Trust me.
Donna Vasquez   You dont have to be an artist Sep 5, 2026 11:19 pm
Nature journaling is observation, not fine art. A rough sketch with notes captures more than a perfect drawing. Just record it.

My uncle does this for a living and he agrees 100% with what you said.
Bob Nakamura   A patch of nature to call your own Aug 29, 2026 8:19 am
Visit the same spot regularly through the year. A familiar patch teaches you more than a dozen new places. Get to know one place.

This is why I love this group. Real advice from real people.

I had the opposite experience actually. For me it was completely different.

Respectfully, my mileage varied. But I can see why this works for most people.
