Trying to learn to cook — what should a beginner master first?

I'm 25 and my cooking skills are limited to boxed mac and cheese, scrambled eggs, and heating up frozen stuff. I want to actually learn to cook real food. What are the first 5 dishes a beginner should learn to make?

I have a basic kitchen setup. Willing to invest in a couple good pots/pans if needed.

1. Pasta with jarred sauce (learn to boil pasta perfectly). 2. Stir-fry (learn high heat cooking). 3. Roasted chicken thighs (learn oven cooking). 4. Soup (learn to build flavors). 5. Rice + beans (learn a complete cheap meal).

Get one good 12-inch stainless steel pan and one heavy Dutch oven. Those two will cover 90% of cooking. Don't buy a set — buy two great pieces.

Watch Alton Brown's Good Eats on Food Network. He explains the WHY behind cooking techniques, not just the how. It'll make you a better cook faster than any recipe book.
