Great thread! I recommend starting with QBasic before moving to C++. Get the fundamentals down first.

Same situation here. Make sure you install SP2 for Windows 2000. Fixes a lot of security holes.

Random thought — Just dual boot. You can have Windows for games and Linux for everything else.
