DeepSkyStacker is free and handles most tasks. Registax for planetary. MaxIm DL for serious deep sky work.

Refractors give the sharpest stars. SCTs are versatile. Newtonians need collimation but give great aperture per dollar.

DSLR on a tripod with a wide lens. 15-second exposures at high ISO. You can capture the Milky Way for zero extra cost.
